Introduction

Cappagh Browne Utilities Limited (CBUL) recently completed an innovative project in Hastings, using SoluForm’s concrete-filled bagwork to reinforce a manhole chamber in a highly sensitive river environment. This project highlights CBUL’s commitment to protecting natural ecosystems while delivering cost-effective and sustainable solutions.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

The site presented significant environmental constraints, being located within a nature reserve next to a steep riverbank. Martin Curry, East Sussex Supervisor at CBUL, described the scope of the work:

“This particular job focused on reinforcing a manhole chamber and using SoluForm bags to bolster its protection. Instead of excavating and replacing the structure—a large-scale project involving extensive disruption—we opted for this innovative approach to minimise impact on the surroundings.”

Why SoluForm?

SoluForm’s concrete-filled bagwork provided the ideal solution for this delicate environment. Unlike traditional grout bags Soluform requires no specialist equipment for filling or placement, making installation simpler and more cost-effective. In most cases, it also allows concrete placement without the need for dewatering or temporary works.

Martin explained:

“It’s an ecologically friendly solution, rather than using traditional concrete bagwork. The process involves staggering the bags like a brick wall, and once moisture reaches them, they harden. It’s just as effective as conventional methods but with far less overall disruption and environmental impact.”

Safeguarding the River Environment

Given the site’s ecological sensitivity, CBUL prioritised environmentally responsible practices throughout the project. The reinforced manhole chamber now provides enhanced protection against erosion, ensuring long-term resilience. Martin emphasised the additional benefits:

“The biodegradable outer bag contains any contaminants during the setting process, preventing adverse effects on aquatic life. By reinforcing the manhole inside and out with Soluform bags, we’re ensuring long-term stability while safeguarding the river habitat.”

Innovation in Action

The project at Ghyllside Avenue exemplifies how innovative materials and methods can effectively balance infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship. By using SoluForm’s eco-friendly solution, CBUL delivered a robust repair while maintaining the integrity of the sensitive river ecosystem.
